La Gata #2 Tuesday 9/2/14: La Pista Falsa

Right to the new!
Mariano (Pablo's brother) is going to the movies and he tells (not asks) mom to give him money. She's loaded! Mom says she's not made of money. He wouldn't have to beg for money for taxis if his mom would let his dad get him a car. The house has a chofer. "Yeah", the little twerp says "but he's always busy with the blind one or my brother." (Dude, that's your sister!) Little girl does't put up with crap. She'd rather be blind than a bad person like him. Go, girl!!  Mariano wheedles--don't be coda (cheap), mom! He's got promises to keep. He asked this girl to the movies ....mil pesos should be enough. Mom comments that he's too young for cars and dates. She knows the movies don't cost that much. He wants to get the girl some ice cream, too. Mom mutters about her kids, one is  spendthrift, one is caritativa (charitable) the other thinks he's St. Francis of Assisi. Next thing she knows he'll be filling the house with the gentuza (riff raff.)

Pablo calls Esmeralda a deer (gamo) because she slides so fast, but he has to explain the word. She kind of takes offense. He asks what he did and why she's mad. She tells him about his mom and how she treated her. Esmeralda explains that mom threatened to kick her off the property by force. Pablo is a little incredulous, but he agrees his mom was probably rude. Esme thinks his mom is a vieja estirada (stuck up old broad.....from last night's vocabulary.) Esmeralda tells Pablo his mother acts like poor people don't have the right to walk on the same ground she walks on. Pablo thinks Esme shouldn't think poorly of his mom. She's not that bad. Apparently he's the one who's blind. He doesn't think it's fair that Esme is mad at him for what his mother did. He says something about Rita. Esme thinks that's different because Rita is not her real mother. Esme doesn't have a mom, but she'd rather be alone than have a mom like his.

Mom is still kvetching. Mariano has bad grades. He promises to study for exams. She finally gives him all the money she has left. He keeps calling mom viejita, even after she asks him not to. He leaves and congratulates himself for bilking his mom out of the cash before Pablo could ask for it.Virginia may be blind, but she can see her brother's true character. She warns her mother that Mariano is getting out of control and she's worried that mom will not recognize in time how bad he is. Mom ignores her warning.

Augustin (Husband and father to the children) is home early. He has a terrible headache and "that man" is causing him trouble again. There's a national holiday coming up and that means pardons. Seems there's some prisoner looking to get a pardon (could this be Rita's son?) If he gets it, it could mean the ruin of the family. There was clearly something fishy with the case and Augustin. He's worried it could cost them.....Lorenza (Pablo's mother) interrupts to say she doesn't think they need to worry. The man is a criminal and never going to get the indulto (pardon.) Indultos are given out for minor crimes. Augustin is worried about something else. This prisoner must be very resentful and thirsty for vengeance (sediente de venganza.)  If he doesn't get the pardon, he could escape and and he won't rest until he finds Augustin!

Pablo begs Esmeralda not to say bad things about his mother. Esmeralda tells him his mom is obnoxious and so is he. She doesn't want to see him again. He asks her not to be rude. He continues to call after her.

Meanwhile, his mother discovers he's NOT in his room reading and drawing. She looks out the window and wonders what he's doing on the mugrosa barranca (nasty hill.) She runs outside and hollers for Omar (the chofer.) They are going to go get Pablo from that hill. He could get hurt! Unfortunately for Esme, Lorezna finds her instead. Where's my son?! The harpy shrieks ¿Dóndeeeeeeeeee?

Jarocha searches for Rita. She asks Grabato where she is. She took Ines (is that the grandaughter) to the bus station. Was it some school trip?? Anyhoo, Jarocha reads my mind. Rita has Gata and Centavo out begging and Ines is livin' the life. Rita finally walks up and Jarocha gets to give her the news about Tilico, Rita's son. There was a borlote (uproar) at the prison last night and Tilico escaped!!

Lorenza continues to shriek and demand the whereabouts of her son. Esme tells her he said good bye and took off (se peló.) Lorenza can't believe the was Esme talks. Mom tells Esme she is nobody and has no right to try to be friends with Pablo. Virgina tries to calm her mother down, but the woman keeps ranting. If Esme tries to come around Pablo again, Lorenza will have her put in an orphanage. She surely has no parents. If she did, they wouldn't let her run around looking like she does. Virginia tells her mother there is no reason to offend Esme. Lorenza calls her a damn raggedy rag (andrajosa). Laura Zapata is scary.

Pablo snuggles with Principe on the hill and reads. Esme looks on and decides not to tell him anything his mom said. She worries they might not let him come back to the hill. She'll say good-bye to him today.

Rita and Jarocha discuss the escape. Rita tells Jarocha that her son has sworn vengeance on the person who put him in jail (sure sounds like Augustin knows Tilico and vice versa.) Jarocha worries that if Tilico comes around, it will mean bad news for La Gata.

Esme has some lines and Pablo corrects her grammar (he thinks she should use "regresó" instead of whatever she said. I think she used an "haiga" instead of an "haya.") Esme apologizes to Pablo for blaming him for his mom's attitude. He forgives her. He brought her a sammich. She is distracted by a Cross Fit emblazoned truck. This leads to her asking what it says and Pablo realizes she can't read.

Lorenza is still looking for Pablo. Virginia tells her that Pablo being with Esme is not so horrible. She advises her mother not to be so hard on Pablo. Lorenza tells herself she needs to be smarter than Esme so she can convince Pablo what's best for him.

Pablo asks how old she is (he guess 10 or 11) and wonders if she's ever been to school. Well of course she hasn't. She's had to spend her life begging. Pablo insists that kids go to school. She explains that not all kids do. He offers to teach her, but she refuses on the the grounds that it will make his mom angry. He says his mom will never separate them. He kisses her on the cheek. He promises.  Wow. Daniel, you've got some big shoes to fill, buddy. This kid is killing it.

Rita goes in search of El Bigotes.

Lorenza remembers her conversation with Augustin. She thinks he's over reacting about the prisoner wanting vengeance. She fires up her laptop and hears about the escape. Names are not being released in order to not hinder the search.

Rita wants to know if it's true what he told Jarocha. Chucho Orea is her son. Did he really escape?

Lorena has informed Augustín and wants to know what they should do. He thinks they need to get as far away as possible.

Pablo wants Esme to leave it to him to solve the issue with his mom. She doesn't need to be afraid. He made her a promise and he'll keep it. Now he wants her to promise she'll bathe and comb her hair (I'm getting a Marimar/CI vibe.) She does't want to make that promise, but he wants her to so she can see how pretty she is. She thinks she skinny and ugly. He thinks she has pretty eyes. When he gets older and learns to paint, he's going to paint a portrait of her...after she's bathed of course. Ok, she says. Now lets eat and wrestle in a playful way that will get our hormones humming in a few years (heck, Pablo's may already be humming.)

Rita asks about the escape. Bigotes's cousin told him about it. During the escape Tilico was shot.

Lorenza asks where they are supposed to go, the ranch? Augustin suggests New York or Europe. Lorenza is worried about what people will think, and Augustin says they can stuff it. Make up some excuse, he says. Lorenza thinks they should wait. Tomorrow they will surely publish the list of escapees and they can see if his name on the list. Augustin worries that tomorrow will be too late. Dead mean can't read names on a list (ISBIS-It sounds better in Spanish.)

Rita falls into Bigotes arms when she hears her son has been shot. He's not dead, Bigotes assures her. He's just injured. Bigotes encourages her to cry, but she says the does't know how to cray. Bigotes offers to take her back to her Jacal and give her some tequila.

Esme eats her torta milanesa and Pablo shows her the toiletries he brought her. She thinks the ribbon is for the cat, but he corrects her. It's to put in her hair when it's clean. She puts talc on her face, and he tells her it's not supposed to be used that way. She feeds the cat some of her sammich.

It's been 12 hours and Augustin is still fretting. Lorezna reminds him that the man doesn't even have their address. When they "did what they did" they moved afterward and Augustin changed his office. Yup. Something fishy definitely went down. Augustin thinks that doesn't matter and they need to leave and ya. Lorenza still wants to wait. The kids will ask questions. Augustin says they need to obey. Lorenza doesn't want them to know the truth. She tells Augustin to not tell them. They need to remain calm and not get ahead of themselves. They will know in a few hours if the man in question escaped or not.

Esme continues to stuff her face. Pable asks her again if she wants to learn to read. He can meet her every afternoon. She turns him down since she needs to go out begging. He doesn't take no for an answer. Whenever she can get away he'll teach her. She's excited by the prospect of being able to read books.

No names have been released yet and Lorenza and Augustin are going crazy.

Pablo gives Esme his handkerchief so she can wipe her face. He tells her she can keep it. He wants her to have it as a souvenir. He tells her when he gets older he'll make lots of money and buy her whatever she needs. She says she will do that herself (I'm translating loosely....or completely misunderstanding.) He tells her that she will have to study hard and she says she will since he's going to teach her. He promised to be her friend, didn't he? Yes, he did. He will always be her friend.

Esme heads back home to find a drunk and passed out Rita (better than an awake Rita.) Jarocha comes by and is about to tell Esme about the escape when they hear the ominous whistle of Tilico. Jarocha makes Esme turn out the light and close up the jacal.

Pablo is snuggled into his warm bed, swearing that despite his mother's disapproval he won't let Esme continue to be ignorant. He will teach her to read.

Jarocha, Esme and Centavo huddle in the jacal.

Lorenza informs Augustin that them names of the escapees have been released. So the man they are worried about and Rita's son are NOT the same person.

Tilico bangs on the door looking for Rita.

Lorenza doesn't think they should let this man affect them. He's a thing of the past and their children are the present. Augustin thinks that man can still show up at any moment. Lorenza reminds Augustin that their children love and respect them. If the kids find out the truth, they'll reject Lorenza and Ausustin and she will never allow that!

Jarocha acts like it's just her and her husband and that Rita and La Gata moved out a while back. They went off to La Villa. (Hasn't anyone else gotten the impression that there's more to the Tilico/La Gata thing? Jarocha really wants to keep him away from her. Is he some sort of sex offender?)

The next morning Rita wakes up mumbling about her bender the night before. A stranger knocks on her door and wants to know some information. A friend of his was at the jacal last night and was told the Doña Rita who used to live their had moved. Rita informs him that that is not true and she is Rita. Who came to see her last nigh.

Esme begs. She gets some cash and runs off. Centavito sells gum.

Esme brought Rita some tacos and atole. Rita is mad that Esme lied to Tilico. Esme tell Rita she wasn't the one who lied. Rita throws the hot atole at her, but Esme duck. To paraphrase Kat--Anvils lady. Anvils.

Omar bought all the papers. She and Augustin search them for the list of escapees. She wants to be sure that man is not free.

In a reclusorio somewhere, Victor Borgia, esquire (he's baaaack!) awaits a prisoner. He informs El Silencioso that his pardon has been denied.

Augustin believes that they can finally breathe easy.

Victor Borgia, esquire did all he could but couldn't get a pardon. He might be able to get the sentence reduced because of El Silencioso's good behavior. El Silencioso doubts it. He's going to rot in the jail. And the folks who put him there know what they did. The lawyer can't believe he got such a harsh sentence. El Silencioso admits he killed a man in self defense. He got a 30 year sentence. "Those people" used all their influence to get him locked away forever. If he ever gets out, they better be afraid. His revenge will be terrible.

La Gata, Centavito and that other kid have lines. That other kid says something about being a lawyer. La Gata says something about how Pablo says a person can be whatever they want and she believes him since he doesn't lie.

El Silencioso repeats that he killed that man in self defense. He swears he's the victim. They took his wife, his child, his home!! He's going get his revenge if it's the last thing he does. They will pay!!

Rita leaves the jacal and is followed by a sketchy guy. She meets up with Tilico on some tracks and his mouth is moving, but I hear no lines. QTH? Cops arrive and arrest Tilico. Rita screams for them to let her son go!

Lots of info tonight!

I'm speculating that El Silencioso was wronged by Augie and Lorenza.

I'm also speculating that Esme is his daughter.

Gracias, Sara! I'm with you on your speculations.

I feel sorry for that poor kitty, sprayed with some horrid, non-feline-smelling perfumey stuff. And he took it like a champ. Well done, actor cat!

Jarocha's good people. To be that scared of Tilico herself, but put the safety of the kids first, makes her classier than Pablo's mom in my book.

Pablo is SO trying to pull a My Fair Lady on Esmeralda.

Thank you to everyone who commented late today on yesterday's recap, and I apologize for not calling everyone out by name. Today was a rough day, but being able to check the comments on my phone periodically really helped. We have some very enthusiastic and eloquent commenters! Dare I hope some of you will give recapping a try? No pressure...you could always just try it once and see...just think about it....

Thank you, Sara! I, too, agree with your thoughts re El Silencioso.

It makes me sad to see children in such poverty. (Yes, it's my empathic self again).

Fatima

Sara, thanks for a informative and witty recap. I have been looking forward to La Gata but missed the first episode yesterday. However I am plunking my chair down on the patio to join y'all.

There was an awful lot of emphasis by Pablo on washing, shampooing and combing. Guess he is trying to be helpful but geez, give the girl a break.

Also I felt bad for that poor actor playing the actual cat. The Esme actress slings the poor cat over her arm like a cheap purse. Hopefully a habit she will outgrow soon.

J in Oregon

I'm going to chalk up Pablo's insistence on hygiene to a PSA. Health and whatnot. Or it will turn out that bath and body works is a sponsor and we'll get product placements. Lol.

I was happy the cat got a little torta milanesa.

And maybe the spray stuff was a topical catnip. :)

I'm pretty excited about the time jump tonight.

Kat - sorry to hear you had a rough day. Still on Jury duty?

Thanks Sara. Things were rapid fire last night and you made sense of them for me.

Augustin - "I'm normally not a praying man but if you're up there, save me superman"

Esmeralda - Pablo, what does OLD NAVY mean

Mariano - Super Mariano Brother

Virgina - blind doesn't mean I can't see

Pablo - if I fix a broke one maybe she'll like me

Lorenza - I calling Animal Control

El Silencioso - shut your mouth about the revenge thing if you ever want a pardon

Thanks Sara!

El Silencioso aka The Quiet One needs a haircut and a shave. Where is the prison barber?

I like the little sister. She has spunk. She may be blind but she's the voice of reason.

Mariano is such a brat. I already have a feeling of how he'll be as an adult.

I'm glad Tilico was caught. It's back to the slammer for him.

Thank you Sara for the recap. I have waited so log for La Gata, and am trying so hard to like it, but so far it is not living up to expectations. I am appalled at that poor cat bing slung around like "prop" which it is. It is obviously drugged out of its little mind.

So far the only redeeming character, in my opinion , is Pablo. I will wait until Daniel A. shows up to see if he can make it more interesting. I will hang in there with Gringo. What is anyone else watching that is more enjoyable??

Here is hoping it picks up a tad.

Sara, thanks for your recap. Episodes like this where they are laying out who the sociopaths are and who has the dark secrets don't cover much ground, but you managed to make it interesting and fun.

Our daughter once had a cat that was very affectionate and liked to be carried around. He would lay on your lap and purr. My daughter called this "having his motor running."

Pablo without a mean bone in his body, and Mariano without a good one, and Virgina "seeing" it all.

Gringo, I've never been on a patio before: Do I need to bring a folding chair?

David

David-welcome to the Patio, bring a chair and snacks and at some point (when the story goes off the rails) you'll need booze to numb the pain!

Sara, yesterday was the last, and IMO, the worst day of jury duty--delivering the verdict. But now it's over and I can start trying to make up for lost time. Having this happen right when my schedule was going into its natural upswing has been very disruptive!

I'm loving the little sister. I have a feeling she's going to be one of my favorite characters. Looks like we get the big time jump tonight? I hope the older actors are bringing the same energy.

Thanks everyone!! I'm glad I'm not alone on this patio. This show and Maite in general is a guilty pleasure for me.

I tried to be a little more detailed since it's premiere week.

I am also loving the little sister and I hope that the older version of her is just as opinionated and that her parents will not have berated her into silence.

Sara - Fab recap. Appreciate the vocab.

I didn't think it possible cause Rita is so mean, but I felt sorry for her when the police arrested her son. Tilico didn't seem like a menace, but who knows.

Hopefully, by the time leap Pablo has finished giving hygiene lessons.

Thanks Sara for a really fabulous recap. Sorry to post so late but I'm working 10am-7pm for the next 2 weeks. Don't know if you'll see this but just in case, I wanted you to know how much I loved and learned from the recap.

Now I'm off to watch tonight's recorded episode.

Thank you, Sue NY!
